After a long absence I have returned. Here is a few things going on in 8-O.
District Governor Lion Ken Marks is working to charter a few new clubs in the area. Two of the areas we are targeting are Mamou and the Delcambre/Erath area. Anyone interested in joining a club in these areas you can leave a message with how to contact you in the comments section below and write "private" in it. I have to review all comments before they will post, I won't post your information, when I see "private", I will pass on your information to Lion Ken.
Because you were a Star District in 2005-2006, I was allowed to present five diamond pins to deserving 8-O members. I could have passed out a dozen or more, 8-O worked so hard during my year as governor. The pins were awarded to:
Lion Rene Leblanc, Cabinet Secretary, 2005-2006
Lion J. W. Harrison, Cabinet Treasurer, 2005-2006
Lion Mike Bonin, Lions Camp President, 2005-2006
Lion Jeff Robinson, State Coordinator, CubSight Program
Lion Ray Cecil, Executive Director, Louisiana Lions Camp

Katrina Update, Monday, Sept 5
There will be an emergency district cabinet meeting on Thursday, September 8, 7:00 pm, at Lion Norma Lee Dugal's house, 4261 HWY 182, Opelousas. If possible I would like at least one member from each club to attend and also any PDGs. I will email directions and a map tomorrow.
The District 8-O Convention in November is postponed until spring. The facility we had rented is being used as a shelter, also many of the key Lions helping me are involved in disaster relief. We will have a regular cabinet meeting sometimes around the November date.
I have recieved word of a number of clubs who have cooked or will be cooking in shelters. Please email information on what your club is doing to assist the disater relief. We will eventually set up a reporting system, but I need to find out what clubs are doing.

Report From Cameron Parish
VDG Lion Dinah Landry Reports:
We are doing well in Cameron Parish housing a minimum of 500, could be others who have not been reported in the outlying areas are in people's homes. We spent yesterday hauling goods andsupplies from shelter to shelter and even set up washers and dryers at one shelter to accomodate clothes washing. My dad donated the appliances. Expecting the shipment of blankets in Tuesday morning and a shipment of food by the end of the week. We will be hauling from site to site. Everything has seemed to calm down here a little. I just checked with the shelters this am and all is well. A little hectic but calmer than Friday. Dinah

Kartina Update Sunday, September 4
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ALL LIONS IN YOUR CLUB.
The governors from all districts in Louisiana and ID Lion Bobby Eichorn met yesterday at the Camp in Leesville. The plans for an organization to coordinate statewide relief efforts and the grant money from International were initiated. The statewide MD 8 effort will be coordinated out of the League Office at the camp.
An 8-O Disaster Relief Account has been set up. Money will be used to supplement the LCIF Grant and to buy necessities for those in the shelter. Please contact J. W. Harrison at 337-837-0088. Right now we are finding that many in the shelters need help refilling maintenance drugs. We have set up accounts with pharmacies and have a procedure worked out to provide these. UNLIKE OTHER ASSISTANCE AGENCIES, THE 8-O AND MD 8 DISASTER RELIEF HAS NO ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS.
THE EYE FOUNDATION IS STILL ALIVE! Although access to the foundation offices is not available, the administrative tasks will be moved to another location, most likely the camp. The satellite clinics are still intact and operational. More information will be coming.
The Eye Foundation Corvette survived and will be available for raffle in January, athought the date and place of raffle may have to change.
The Big Bass Rodeo is still on at this time, however,. the venue may change. The boat raffle will continue. Right now the boat is in North Louisiana and will stay there as all festivals and events in South Louisiana have been cancelled.
The Texas Hold'em Tournament has been postponed until Spring 2006.
Please email me information on what your club and members are doing with disaster relief.
Yesterday I went to the camp and visited those sheltered there. Some were old friends, like Lions Cesar and Vicki Fonseca, Fred Balongia, and Bryan Foret. I also met many new friends like Father Ricard from New Orleans. He has over 40 of his parishoners from the inner city. You have heard many of the horror stories from the shelters, there are none here. Considering all that they have been through, sprits were high and everyone working together. YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOUR CAMP. Lion Ray Cecil and his staff and volunteers from Anacoco and Leesville Lions have done a wonderful job.

Emergency District Cabinet Meeting
There will be an emergency district cabinet meeting sometimes this week. I am having difficulty obtaining a location, because many of the places we use are being used for shelters.
If we have to we will meet in a parking lot or under the trees. Anyways, I want to meet Wednesday or Thursday night and I need to know what every club is doing for relief.

Lion Jeff Robinson has been working in the Special Needs Shelters and had informed me of is a need for nurses. These are shelters with persons with medical problems. Please inform an nurse, (RN, LPN, NP) of the need. They should call (337) 262-1311 or Toll Free: 1-800-901-3210.

Katrina Update, Thursday, Sept. 1
Dear 8-O Lions and Friends,
Lousiana has been hit with the worst disaster in the history of the United States. Now is the time for the Lions of 8-O to live up to our motto "WE SERVE".
I expect to receive a check tomorrow for $10,000 from Lions Club International Foundation. This LCIF Emergency Grant is going to be used to buy some necessities for members in shelters in the Lafayette/Opelousas area. Since we have estimated that there are 10,000 people in shelters in this area, we will only scratch the surface. I have heard from several international directors and have been assured more money is on the way. Those Melvin Jones Fellowships were a good investment.
***I have received an urgent request from Lion Dinah Landry for 125 blankets and pillows needed in Cameron Parish. Lion Dinah has been quite busy with relief as a Lion and in her day job with the Council on Aging.***
If you wish to contribute goods to be used at shelters, please contact your local shelter to find out what is needed or contact me. I will have information on what to do if you wish to make a cash donation within the next 24 hours.
Please pass this infomation on to ALL LIONS in your clubs and please contact me if you need anything. Also please pray.

August District Governor’s Message
Last month we talked about a Passion to Grow. This month let’s talk about a Passion for Outreach.
What is outreach? Lions Clubs do not exist in a vacuum. We did not join Lions to eat a meal and give each other plaques. We are a service organization. In order to serve we must be visible in the community, we must know our community, and the community must know us.
All clubs should make contact with the government service agencies in your community. You need to be aware of what those agencies offer; they need to be aware of what we offer.
Some examples from 8-O:
A friend of a member and her children lost everything they owned in a fire. Hours after the fire, the club had not only given her some money to help her buy essentials, club members had used contacts with several local and state agencies to help her get assistance.
A special-ed teacher noticed a child in her class with sight problems. She also knew some Lions and eventually the child ended up being referred to the Eye Foundation in New Orleans for services.
A club established a relationship with its parish Head Start. Now every fall each and every Head Start student in the parish is screened by Cub Sight and Head Start officials in the parish support other Lions projects.
A club has a photographer from the local paper at every meeting, and gets regular publicity for the club.
The goal is to get out and know your community and let your community know you. Make contact with special-ed teachers to recruit campers. Invite your mayor and town officials to your club meeting. Be aware of the Department of Social Services, Department of Health and Hospitals, Council on Aging, and Community Action offices in your parish and make them aware of your club and what Lions can offer. Make as many people in your community aware of who Lions are and what we do.
Who knows, you might even get some new members.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. Big Bass Rodeo, September 24, 2005
This year's 7th Annual Louisiana Lions Big Bass Rodeo falls on the same weekend as USA/Canada Leadership Forum. Many of the Lions who help out at Big Bass will be at the Forum in Peoria promoting 2006 International Convention in New Orleans.
Big Bass is the biggest statewide fundraiser for our two state projects. This year we need your help more than ever to make it successful. Please contact J. W. and Kathy Harrison (337-837-0088) if you are able to help. Kathy can also make housing reservations at the marina for you and your club.
